SENIOR LEGAL ASSISTANT LITIGATION

One of our local authority clients are currently recruiting for a Senior Legal Assistant Litigation. This is a temporary contract for 3 months with possible further extension based on budget and performance. Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary The post holder will assist and support the Senior Lawyer (Senior Legal Officer), Principal Lawyer, Deputy Principal Lawyer and Head of Legal Services in such a way as to contribute to an excellent and continuously improving legal service to enable the Council to fulfil its vision of making the borough a better place to live in accordance with Council values. Duties and Responsibilities * To interpret and apply the law, dealing with procedural and other requirements applicable to local authorities, and in the giving of advice. * To have conduct of a caseload, attend case conferences and carry out negotiations on behalf of the Council. * To organise and carry out a range of legal duties such as interviewing witnesses, preparation of proceedings, including advising on evidence and the merits of a case, with supervision as appropriate. * To provide advice and assistance in all areas of the Council’s work to client officers and Members with minimal supervision in any of the following areas: preparing cases for litigation, ensuring that all evidence, statements and summons are properly prepared and served and all parties are aware of and meet their deadlines; representing the Council in appropriate cases and liaising closely with court officers to ensure successful preparatory work. * To instruct Counsel for the presentation of cases in court, appeals, inquiries, tribunal and other hearings, negotiations or arbitrations. * To prepare reports for senior managers and Members as required and to accompany and support Legal Offices in meetings and briefings. * To support the development of the Legal Assistants through coaching and advice * To provide assistance and support to colleagues by undertaking research, assisting in preparation of work and ancillary duties on their behalf. * To organise their own workload and that of those Legal Officers under their supervision to enable legal services to be delivered in a timely way, maximising resources. * To maximise the use and effectiveness of information technology systems.
