How Can Junior Lawyers Take Ownership of Their Career Development

| Career Insights

The early years of a legal career are challenging yet critical too. Professional development is not only a requirement and a big part of a firm’s role to provide support and supervision, but also an important for junior lawyers to take initiative of to succeed.

By being proactive and showing your drive - you are in a better position to grow in your confidence, strengthen and develop your key skills and nurture significant opportunities which may help to support your long-term career.

Why Take Ownership Early?

Taking responsibility for your career growth can benefit you in various ways, some including:

  • Showing your supervisors that you are motivated and reliable and want to succeed
  • Adding to your skills to help you stand out in a competitive market
  • Getting stuck into your development and building knowledge and expertise to carve out your niche

Put simply - ownership is about taking control of your career and development and pushing yourself forward, motivating yourself and working to excel rather than doing only the minimum of what is expected of you, thereby creating opportunity.

Key Tips for Taking Ownership Effectively

There are many ways junior lawyers can take ownership of their professional development.

For example, you may wish to:

  • Invest in solid training and development from the outset – while training, competence and development is already critical for lawyers, you can attend specific courses you are interested in and show interest in extra training opportunities and webinars available to you.
  • Seek feedback and take it on board to learn – early development is vital for solicitors. So seek feedback politely and use wisely any constructive comments to learn and grow.
  • Offer to become in involved in projects and opportunities – where it is possible, seek to take on new opportunities which become available to you e.g. you may wish to volunteer to get involved in certain unique or challenging cases or deals. Some firms might even offer you with secondment opportunities – which can further widen your commercial experience and open doors for the future e.g. the chance to work in-house.
  • Show initiative and be a team player – Taking responsibility for small tasks, offering to support colleagues and generally being helpful and proactive in your workload can build a positive reputation and allow you to learn from others and develop fast.
  • Seek mentorship – as a junior, you may wish to seek mentorship from a senior colleague or partner who you can discuss your progress and growth with. Firms may offer this through a manager to help you in your career growth, but a mentor can be a trusted advisor who can add extra value and support your growth journey.

Professional development can significantly help your career – by allowing fast growth and opening new opportunities. The legal world can be highly competitive and therefore it is important for those at a junior level to invest in their own development in order to set themselves apart and put themselves in a strong position to develop and grow as a lawyer.
