While the route to becoming a lawyer used to be rigid, there are now more ways than one to becoming a qualified solicitor in the UK:
The University Route
1. Complete a qualifying law degree (LLB) usually with a 2:1 minimum, which takes a minimum of three years. If you studied an unrelated undergraduate subject, you may still sit the SQE (unlike previously where you would need to complete a GDL to bring you up to speed) though you will need to complete a SQE preparation course before sitting the exams. 2. Undergo the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which has replaced the previous solicitor examination routes such as the LPC and the GDL. This comprises of three stages: SQE1, where you will be tested on the application of Functioning Legal Knowledge by an online Multiple-Choice Q. SQE2,where you will be tested on Practical Legal Skills such as client interviewing, advocacy, case and matter analysis, legal research, and drafting, and finally Stage 3, which is two years of qualifying work experience.The Solicitors Apprenticeship Route
A more recent approach to becoming a solicitor is undergoing a six-year, level 7 solicitors’ apprenticeship. This programme is aimed at post A-level students, paralegals and chartered legal executives. By the end of this programme, you will have gained a LLB undergraduate degree as well as a master (LLM), completed the SQE stages 1 and 2, AND have completed the 2 years of qualifying work experience.
