Frequently Asked Questions

1. What do professional support lawyers do?

Professional support lawyers, or PSLs, can be found in firms of all sizes and act as the backboone to a firm. They conduct legal research, create and maintain clause banks, draft precedents and example documents for other lawyers to use, give legal updates and training, and even work with their firm's marketing and business development team on things such as briefing notes and press releases. The work of a PSL is varied but necessary.

2. What is the average salary of a professional support lawyer?

3. How do you become a professional support lawyer?

A PSL is still a lawyer, and therefore needs all the qualifications a regular solicitor would. This means taking a route to qualification, whether it be by apprenticeship or degree and LPC, and qualifying into an area of law. After at least 2-3 years of post-qualification practice, you can become a PSL. Most firms prefer more senior-level solicitors as PSLs, therefore the more experience you have in an area, the more employable you become.
