What Might Lawyers Wish to Post on LinkedIn

| Career Insights

A positive online presence can be beneficial to various professionals including lawyers. For example – it can help generate trust and a good professional impression. LinkedIn is a key channel which can help solicitors who wish to expand their professional network, attract clients or position themselves as thought leaders within the legal industry.

But in addition to highlighting achievements and experience via a LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn also presents a chance to create and post important content to help themselves gain credibility in a competitive legal market.

Why Invest in LinkedIn to Strengthen a Legal Career?

Even the strongest and busiest of lawyers can use LinkedIn for various benefits including:

  • Building a strong professional reputation
  • Opening new opportunities
  • Attracting new potential clients
  • Staying up to date on key legal issues from colleagues in the industry

Some highlights of advantages of posting regularly (depending on your content and approach) can include the following:

  • If you post regularly, you may be in a better position to be in the front of mind with clients who follow you, or potential clients – focus on quality over quantity too
  • Sharing your opinions or key insights can quickly highlight your knowledge and enthusiasm for your area of practice
  • LinkedIn can also help to generate referrals of work, as well as wider partnerships and other opportunities
  • You can build your own professional brand and confidence by building a strong LinkedIn presence with authentic and valuable posts

Ideas for Posts

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to posting on LinkedIn and each individual will have their own personal goals and style.

Some examples of posts you may wish to consider include the following:

  • Easy to understand legal updates and news – use breaking news as a chance to alert your network, but try to add value by providing clear information
  • Highlight firm developments e.g. discuss key cases or team achievements which can help your profile shine
  • Recount key experiences e.g. you can post about what you learned from a recent industry conference or event
  • Share testimonials such as a client review of your work which your firm has published online with a client’s permission
  • Promote your firm’s materials e.g. important new training videos or podcasts which you feel your network may benefit from

You do not have to post all the time and in fact ‘spamming’ your network may also devalue your posts. As such, post strategically and plan ahead to consider what to post and how to make the posts impactful. Seek guidance from your marketing teams or senior colleagues should you need advice on where to begin.

That said, it is important to also be careful when posting online. Remember your ethical, professional conduct and firm and client confidentiality duties and seek guidance from your firm supervisors if you are unsure about the rules for posting online. Also note that some firms may have social media policies you have to comply with. While this article does not explore the types of rules and restrictions which apply when posting - it is important to be aware of these issues. Also remember that a mistake on social media can be costly for both your and your firm’s reputation.
