What is Nepotism? How Does It Affect Employees?

Imagine, waking up at 6am everyday to revise for your exams and then strenuously researching and applying to law firms, only to be unfairly disadvantaged.

What is Nepotism? How Does It Affect Employees?

In the business world, nepotism is a practice that favours one family member or friend over another in both economic and employment terms. It can somewhat be justified for small family businesses, where long forged relationships can help the business grow quicker. However, where recruitment is openly advertised, companies influenced by nepotism will fail to pick the best person for the job.

US Law Firm, Boies Schiller Flexner LLP Faces Nepotism Allegations.

Allegations were made of domestic violence against Josh Schiller, a partner of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, and son of founder Jonathan Schiller. Schiller was arrested in January after allegations of domestic violence at a California county jail. The company placed Josh Schiller on leave. He returned to work earlier in the year after an outside investigator employed by the firm cleared him and prosecutor dropped the charges. Schiller was also acquitted of domestic violence charges for assault in another case, his lawyer told reporters.

Another shocking story which has come to light is that Josh Schiller tried to copy a joke from Dave Chappelle. Disgustingly, this behaviour was repeated when Schiller was heard ringing derogatory and racist terms at a party thrown by Susan Estrich, who joined the company and became a partner in 2018.

Furthermore, Schiller's son Aaron Schiller heads the architectural firm Schiller Projects, which has done business with the firm. The firm has designed three offices for the firm. However, the functionality of these has been criticised as there is a lack of private rooms for confidential client meetings. This questions the capability of Aaron to design space with lawyers in mind, potentially stemming from favourable treatment received over more experienced builders.

The perceived favourable action towards the brothers has caused over 100 attorneys to leave the firm. Actions which were no doubt also influenced by the firm's decision to undertake work for medical Fraudster, Elizabeth Holmes. It remains to be seen whether the 38% plumet in profits will affect the firm in the long run, but in the short term the vacating of their office space, with an lease being offered for tenants is consequence of the turmoil surrounding Boies Schiller Flexner.
