Becoming a Partner is one of the most senior roles in a law firm, offering significant responsibilities and growth potential. These vary but typically include managing a specific legal department, supervising teams of solicitors, associates, and trainees, and ensuring the effective delivery of legal services. Partners are also accountable for business development, client relations, and contributing towards the wider management and strategic direction of the firm.

In addition to the prestige of the role, becoming a partner offers a range of benefits. Financially, partners often receive a share of the firm’s profits, which can be substantial and financially rewarding. Partners also enjoy a higher level of autonomy in decision-making, allowing you to shape the firm's future and make a tangible impact in the direction of a business.

Partners also play a crucial role in mentoring and developing junior lawyers, contributing to the overall success and reputation of the firm. It is a unique position that allows you to continue practising law at the highest level, while also having a direct influence on the firm’s growth and strategic success, whilst nurturing more junior team members and having the chance to help them progress their own careers. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a legal partner?

A partner in law firm is a highly ranked position. This person can either be an equity or non-equity partner. Law firms will usually award this position to solicitors who have been at the firm for a number of years and have demonstrated their capabilities. As a partner, you will also take on additional responsibilities such as participating in firm management.

2. How long does it take to become a law firm partner?

A large firm will probably have a prescribed partnership path to follow. Smaller firms may not have an established path, but most firms will generally require at least 6 years of post- qualification experience. You could increase your chances to become a lawfirm partner by following opportunities through being geographically mobile, or by choosing an area of law where there is a need for partners in the future.

3. How does a legal partnership work?

Most law firms work on a two-tiered partnership structure, that is, equity and non-equity partnerships. A non-equity partner is not a part owner of the business and are not entitled to the share of profits that an equity partner is entitled to. Nonetheless, non-equity partners can still be awarded bonuses and have good salaries. And equity partner can also vote on decisions that the firm is making.
