Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a legal partner?

A partner in law firm is a highly ranked position. This person can either be an equity or non-equity partner. Law firms will usually award this position to solicitors who have been at the firm for a number of years and have demonstrated their capabilities. As a partner, you will also take on additional responsibilities such as participating in firm management.

2. How long does it take to become a law firm partner?

A large firm will probably have a prescribed partnership path to follow. Smaller firms may not have an established path, but most firms will generally require at least 6 years of post- qualification experience. You could increase your chances to become a lawfirm partner by following opportunities through being geographically mobile, or by choosing an area of law where there is a need for partners in the future.

3. How does a legal partnership work?

Most law firms work on a two-tiered partnership structure, that is, equity and non-equity partnerships. A non-equity partner is not a part owner of the business and are not entitled to the share of profits that an equity partner is entitled to. Nonetheless, non-equity partners can still be awarded bonuses and have good salaries. And equity partner can also vote on decisions that the firm is making.
